Castlebar Mitchels 2-6 Davitts 1-14
Davitts senior team got their season off to a satisfactory start with a fine 1-14 to 2-6 victory away to Castlebar Mitchels on Friday evening. This was a Michael Walsh League tie with both sides heavily understrength.
Davitts were playing into the wind in the opening half but led by 0-6 to 0-5 at half time with Fearghal McGrath (3), Liam Noone (2) and Thomas Waldron hitting the points. The standard of football was surprisingly good in very difficult playing conditions.
Davitts took over in the second period and had extended their lead to 5 points after fine scores from Ronan McNamara (2), Thomas Waldron, Matthew Trench and Fearghal McGrath before Mitchels goaled against the run of play to leave the score 0-11 to 1-6 with fifteen minutes remaining. Davitts pulled away again with McNamara, Paul Carey and Liam Kearns pointing and goal machine Jack Rodgers firing home his side’s only goal. Mitchels added another late goal but Davitts were comfortable winners in the end.
Best for Davitts were Colm Roche, Kevin Gallagher, Ronan McNamara, Thomas Waldron, Matthew Trench and Fearghal McGrath.
